Writing Talk: Say It Like You Mean It

  • The Story Emporium & Bookshop 202 U.S. 79 Hutto, TX, 78634 United States (map)

Dialogue is one of the most powerful tools a writer has—it reveals character, advances plot, and immerses readers in the story. But writing realistic, engaging dialogue is harder than it looks.

In this talk we’ll cover the fundamentals of crafting dialogue that feels authentic, engaging, and purposeful, including how to:

  • Capture natural speech without it feeling “stilted” or forced

  • Balance dialogue with narration, action, and internal thought

  • Give each character a distinct voice, even in nonfiction interviews or memoir

  • Use subtext, rhythm, and pacing to make conversations feel alive

Whether you’re a brand-new writer or someone who’s been working on their craft for years, this talk will help you craft and strengthen the effect of your dialogue.
