Writing Talk: Between Truth and Imagination

  • The Story Emporium & Bookshop 202 U.S. 79 Hutto, TX, 78634 United States (map)

Great stories—whether fiction, memoir, or creative nonfiction—are built on a foundation of truth. But how do you research effectively without letting facts overwhelm your story? And how do you stay imaginative while remaining accurate?

In this hands-on workshop, you’ll learn strategies for:

  • Conducting research efficiently and creatively

  • Incorporating historical, scientific, or real-world details without bogging down your narrative

  • Balancing accuracy with imagination to craft believable, compelling stories

Writers of all genres are welcome! This session includes interactive exercises, practical tips, and strategies to make research both manageable and fun.

Exercises for this talk may include:

Fact vs. Fiction Mapping

  • Pick a historical event, real-world location, or scientific concept.

  • List the “facts” and brainstorm ways to weave imaginative elements into the story without contradicting the truth.

Authenticity Audit

  • Take an excerpt of your work-in-progress (or write a new scene).

  • Highlight areas where research could add depth or clarify facts, and note where imagination drives the story.
