Writing Talk: Hooked on the First Page

  • The Story Emporium & Bookshop 202 U.S. 79 Hutto, TX, 78634 United States (map)

Looking for a way to make sure your readers are hooked from the first page? In this talk we’re going to discuss strategies to craft openings that captivate, as well as common pitfalls that may be selling your story short before it has a chance to get started.

In this talk we will cover:

  • Why the first page matters

  • Common types of hooks (successful and otherwise)

  • Pitfalls that can slow your opening

  • Techniques for increasing engagement

  • Hands-on exercises including rewrites of participants’ openings

Whether you’re a brand-new writer or someone who’s been working on their craft for years, this talk will help you think strategically, intentionally, and objectively about the strength of your opening.
